Week 18: Week 3: Exciting News!

Hello!

I'm determined to catch up with these posts, so let's leap right into writing my week 3 update!

Monday was a lecture that I felt was kind of pointless - it was about how much work journalists do which, at this point in my course, I was very aware of how much work I'm going to be doing in my desired career and I just felt somewhat patronised and belittled so wasn't a big fan! However, in seminar we were writing and doing practical, fun work so it was definitely much better. I hate to admit that I didn't go to shorthand again because I was feeling so awfully tired I'd been falling asleep already so I knew I wouldn't learn anything. I did go to sleep very early that night so I justify and stand by my decision not to go.

Tuesday was another good Law lecture with Kristian but I was still recovering from a very long day at a dance competition at the weekend (I went about 37/38 hours without sleep so was still catching up!) so being there for a 9am was challenging! My seminar in the afternoon was not taken by Kristian and I don't quite see the relevance of it either, but I went so at least I didn't miss anything important.

Wednesday was another really good news day - the third year we'd been working with the week before was the editor this week so put my two friends and I in a group because she knows we work really well together. We participated in creating a package with copy and two videos so we did really well! It was in regard to Valentine's Day and bad pick up lines and involved me and Aimee (warning both of our boyfriends) and downloading tinder to see what awful pick up lines we got! I got an awfully explicit one but we put some of the more appropriate ones in the copy! Have a read: Valentine's Day and Dating Apps: Can You Find The One? (we did the video with bad pick up lines and the awful dating stories, brilliantly edited by James!)

Thursday was my day off and I used it to go to London and see my favourite band, All Time Low, for the 5th time at the O2 arena! I'll be writing a review for the Solent Journalism website (going up Wednesday 17th!) and I wrote a post about tips for going to a concert on my personal blog: 5 Concert Tips!

However, whilst I was back at Waterloo station by 11.10pm, my train didn't leave till 11.35 and there was work on the lines between Basingstoke and Southampton.

So I was put on a replacement bus.

I didn't get back to the station until 2am and didn't get home till nearer half past. By the time I got back, sorted myself out and got into bed it was 3am and having suffered a panic attack and major anxiety due to travel disruption, I was not in a state to go into video the next day. So I emailed my tutor at 3am and spent most of Friday in bed. I missed learning the basics of Final Cut Pro unfortunately but I think I might have a little bit of extra time next week to watch some tutorials on YouTube.

Which brings me to my big news! I won't be going to university next week because on Tuesday, I got an email from Channel 4 (channel 4!!) saying my application for work experience had been successful! I'm going to be working in the online department of channel 4 for a week! My travel and hotel have been paid for, I get breakfast at the hotel and I get to work at a massive company that people have actually heard of for a whole week! I'm hoping I'll get free time in the evenings to work on an assignment that's due at the beginning of the week I get back but I'm going on work experience!

I'm going to be blogging every day on my personal blog next week to document what I'll be doing but I'm very excited! Also very nervous but it's going to be very exciting! Especially catching up with what I'm missing at uni at the same time!

Here's to Channel 4 (and hopefully making a good enough impression to get a job)!

(up to date with this blog at long last!)

Week 17: Week 2: Settling Into Semester 2

Hello!

I'm far more behind on these posts than I'd like to be but I'm trying to get back on track, so let's leap right into my second week back at uni! Just as I've finished my third week...

Monday was a slightly better lecture in that I'd not heard it before, but I can't say how good it was because I have no recollection of what it was about! I then went for an extortionately big breakfast before going back for my seminar that afternoon. I really need to keep up with writing these on time because I can't remember anything! I think it was about writing again (duh, it's my writing development seminar) but I really can't remember any details... which makes this post somewhat irrelevant... but I'll post it anyway!

Tuesday I do remember more clearly - I was almost excited for Law because last week was actually really interesting with Kristian but we had a different lecturer and he wasn't as good I don't think. He went through his presentation really fast, he wasn't as engaging and he was really patronising in the seminar that afternoon so I wasn't his biggest fan! Almost glad to be missing him as our tutorer this week (I'm so behind on these posts).

News Day Wednesday was actually really good - it was my first really productive, enjoyable News Day and it made me excited for the following News Day! My group had been out and got footage for two stories the previous weekend and I wrote copy for the two stories and the rest of my group were editing audio, video and pictures and we put together two really good stories!

I had to leave a bit early to pick up my sister from the train station but if you want to read the story I wrote the copy for and presented the interview for it and I'm actually really proud! And it's got a brilliant toy pun as a title! Toy Sales Rocket to Infinity and Beyond!

Thursday I spent with my sister while she was visiting - we tried to get into a photography studio but unfortunately they were all busy so that was an unsuccessful trip but after some food, we went into town for a little bit, made some dinner then went bowling in the evening! I know this isn't particularly relevant but bowling can be a fairly cheap, fun student activity - we're definitely going to be going again and if it weren't for Laura (my sister) we wouldn't even have considered it!

However on Friday I had to say goodbye to my sister and go back to uni - I went into video and we learnt about the audio side and using different kinds of microphones with they camera and then in theory we learnt about kinds of shot, what an OOV/ULAY is (just a really short news story to be honest) and something else which was clearly so memorable I've definitely not forgotten it.

Oops?

I definitely am behind on these posts but next week is a bit different and very exciting so I'll say in 'next weeks' post what I'm doing and hopefully update you all a bit. Thank you for sticking with me!

Here's to more assignments and a first year-run news story!

Week 16: Week 1: Back To Uni!

Hello!

Sorry this post is late - this week has been busier than I anticipated and my sister was down to visit too so finding time to update this blog has been sparse!

My first lecture back at uni, a 9am start after I'd been up till 3am celebrating my boyfriend's birthday, was a lecture that I'd been given before by a sports journalism lecturer. The same lecturer had given us that exact lecture before and I think I spent 90% of the lecture moaning about it on twitter (productive!). I then sat in my uni's canteen for three hours blogging and looking for work experience and job and getting distracted by god knows what, before going to my seminar in the afternoon which was actually quite good - it was a new unit called Writing Development and as someone who runs three blogs, I can safely say I quite like writing so being given assignments and getting ideas and feelings organised made me feel quite good!

Until shorthand that is, shorthand was painfully horrific - I like shorthand, I love the art itself but our teacher is painfully one-track-minded and enduring her for two hours hurt my brain just a little bit.

But Tuesday was another 9am start and a new day with a new unit - law! It's a much more academic unit than everything we've done so far and I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would, even though I'm struggling to remember everything and there's a lot of words and terminology that I need to learn! After the 9am lecture, I had a couple of hours break and then a two hour seminar in the afternoon which just followed on from the lecture and was equally as interesting. And I was all finished by 2 so it was a nice early day!

Wednesday was the first news day of the term and considering how awful news days were last semester, I was not looking forward to it. However I got a decent story with a good group and it actually made me somewhat optimistic for news days for the rest of the term!

Thursday was a day off that I very much needed - I can't remember what I actually did but I imagine that I did a lot of sleeping and playing MarioKart Wii.

And Friday brought on another new unit - video production! We started to learn about the cameras in the practical part of the lesson and that was fun and then in the 'theory' session was questionable - the teacher was one I definitely need to get used to, she seems quite cutting and very particular. She sounds like someone who will mark our work based on how much she likes it rather than how good it actually is.

But that was the end of the week! On the Sunday I went out with my news day group to get footage for two stories and it felt very productive and so much fun to do what I'd been waiting to do for three months!

I'm about to start writing the post for Week 17, whilst I'm in Week 18 now - I'll try to be more up to date next week!

Definitely need to sort my organisation!
